Kenya – Nairobi
Organisation : Absa Bank Kenya PLC
The building underwent a series of retrofits and operational improvements in 2020–2021 and was certified under the IFC EDGE green building certification standard during this period. Further improvements included the introduction of waste recycling in 2023 and the installation of solar PV in 2026, following a successful pilot in 2025.
The main actions implemented to reduce the energy consumption of this building.
2020–2021
Replaced all existing lighting with LEDs.
Replaced drinking water dispensers on all floors with point-of-use bottleless units.
Replaced washbasin and kitchen faucets with water-efficient fixtures or fitted aerators.
Applied solar shading film to external-facing windows to reduce heat gain from sunlight.
2026
Installed a 110 kWp grid-connected solar PV plant, commissioned on 23 September 2026. Based on the 2025 pilot results, the plant is projected to provide up to 41% renewable energy penetration going forward. This is a projected renewable energy contribution, rather than a measured reduction in energy consumption.
2020–2021
Introduced automatic controls throughout the building.
Installed photosensors for external security lighting.
Installed angle valves beneath all washbasins to help regulate water flow.
2023
Transitioned from waste collection alone to a waste recycling model, supported by twice-yearly reports on the quantity recycled and associated CO₂ emissions avoided.
